Stop the Dreaded Fitness Plateau

June 18th, 2010

I am the type of person that has a number of apps in my iPhone to help me with my regular workout. I’m also the kind of person that gets incredibly bored if I do the same workout again and again. However, it seems that exercise experts agree with me because you do need to mix up your workouts so that your body doesn’t become too comfortable. Even if you have been running 3 miles a day, five days a week, for years, your body still needs new workout routines to mix it up.
If you have hit a plateau in your fitness regimen and are having a difficulty losing weight, it will help to add variety to your workouts. If you’ve been running or walking at the same speed for months at a time, you need to change it up and increase your intensity or use intervals to boost your heart rate. In fact, you may want to try different forms of cardiovascular exercise to burn calories, such as climbing stairs, kickboxing, or even an aerobics class. This change in pace will make a serious difference in the way that your body responds to exercise so that you can get those last 10 pounds off by swimsuit season!

Jalbum: The Top Online Album Choice

June 15th, 2010

Many people have been using the popular Jalbum for quite some time to generate photo albums online. It’s actually quite simple, even for the newest online user, but it seems that their menu is getting more and more extensive. Some of the new tools include a basic photo editor, which will allow you to crop and remove redeye in pictures. You also have the opportunity to post any photo projects that you have created to the Jalbum web hosting service free of charge, although you do have to register your e-mail address and name.

I feel that the strength overall of Jalbum is the skins available to choose from, which allow you to individually customize the look and feel of your website with your favorite Jalbum skin. This takes it from beyond a cookie-cutter photo sharing opportunity where all of your pictures will be displayed in the best way to showcase your personality. This is also quite inspirational so that you can finally download the pictures that have been sitting on your digital camera for months from your daughter’s first birthday party, last Christmas, or even your trip to Jamaica. It’s finally time to create the beautiful album online you deserve without the struggle and hassle of other photo sharing websites!

Where Does Your College Tuition Go?

June 4th, 2010

Of course, we all know that college is more expensive than ever, and you may be trying to budget for your tuition with a handy budget calculator on your iPhone. This will give you some perspective on how to budget during your time in college, but it is often difficult to figure out to do with any leftover cash after paying your tuition. You have to survive, after all!
Recent statistics have shown that 40% of the college budget is spent on additional items, like 6.5% for entertainment, 6.5% for apparel, 4.7% for travel, and 22% for other purchases. These statistics also revealed that 26% of a college student’s budget will be for room and board, which is a pretty hefty chunk of the overall cost. You may have realized by now that college books are more expensive than ever, which may total 4% of the overall tuition. 19% of the college budget will go toward tuition, 3% will go toward transportation, and roughly 8% may be spent on healthcare. If you are a college student having a difficult time budgeting for your upcoming year, try to be smart about your finances and use a budget calculator on your iPhone to make sure that you have more than enough for your education!

Are You Snacking Healthy?

June 1st, 2010

I was so happy to get my iPhone back from milliamp.com working great again after I dropped it. With all of the calorie counting apps out there on the iPhone, I thought that it would be a fabulous idea to talk about some of the healthiest snacks so that you can make sure that you are keeping your goal weight for the summertime. It is so easy to let all of the pounds creep up on you based on snacking, even if you are eating well at meal times.
As an example, one bag of baked Cheetos that is portion controlled is 100 calories. 1/4 cup of hummus with three carrot sticks is 80 calories. A Subway turkey breast wrap is 190 calories, and a package of Planters almonds is roughly 130 calories. If you are looking for something that is a little sweeter, a 100 calorie package of Jelly Belly beans is 100 calories (of course), and a half of a banana with frozen chocolate chips is around 123 calories. These are just a few guidelines to keep you in line in your snacking, which is one of the quickest areas to cause you to pack on the calories without even realizing it. With a little bit of help, you can look even more fabulous when it comes to swimsuit season!

Are You a YouTube Lover?

May 25th, 2010

We are all well aware that the YouTube app comes with the iPhone, which means that it can be incredibly addicting to watch when you are in traffic, waiting at the doctor’s office, or even in between classes at school. The recent news was confirmed that YouTube recently revealed that 2 billion videos are watched on their website on a daily basis after they have been in operation for five years. This is more than amazing and ridiculous at the same time, but if you are a YouTube fan, you may not be surprised at all.
Many marketing companies have lately realized that YouTube is the way of the future so they are trying to create viral videos about a product or service so that it gets millions of views and becomes popular. But is it really that simple? Often times, many of the most popular videos on YouTube are simply ridiculous or funny, and they are posted by a teenager or parent who didn’t think that they would become viral. On the flipside, there are still those people that post staged videos of themselves in hopes that they will become popular, but that doesn’t mean that we aren’t all watching them from time to time on YouTube.

Are You Still Smoking?

May 11th, 2010

What I have noticed recently is that there are quite a few quit smoking apps for the iPhone, so I wanted to give them a little bit of an overview to find the 411. Of course, if you are regularly smoking, one of the most detrimental effects that it can have this on your skin. What many people don’t realize is that these small fine lines around your lips are caused by continuous smoking, due to puffing and inhaling on a cigarette.
Another big issue is that smoking causes free radical damage underneath the surface of your skin, which will break down skin cells so that you begin to develop fine lines and wrinkles. We have unfortunately all seen the very leathery face of a smoker, which makes you look much older than your years. Even if you are only socially smoking, you are still at risk for premature wrinkles since toxins will begin to build up underneath the surface of your skin and create serious damage. If this is the case, it is best to stop smoking right away so that you can continue to look youthful and beautiful. Don’t say that I didn’t warn you!

Random Acts of Kindness

May 5th, 2010

When I was surfing the Internet on my iPhone this morning, I came upon an interesting post of random acts of kindness. This is something that inspired me to be a little nicer to people today, instead of only being aware of myself.
Here are a few interesting random acts of kindness that you can try to brighten someone else’s day:
• On the toll road, pay for the driver behind you at the tollbooth.
• Stop to give directions to someone who looks lost.
• Pay the meter for someone who’s time has expired.
• When you buy new clothing, donate or give away some of your old clothing.
• On a crowded bus, offer your seat to someone who is disabled or elderly.
• Bring coffee to your assistant or coworker at work.
• Send a note to an old teacher that changed your life.
• Forgive the debt of someone who owes you, and don’t bring it up anymore!
• Tell someone you are sorry when you have done something wrong.
• Help someone pack if they are moving.
• Leave your waiter or service person a very good tip.
• Bring muffins or doughnuts to share with the entire office.
• Offer to pet sit for a friend when they are going out of town.

You will be surprised at how good these random acts of kindness make you feel!

Don’t Skip Meals!

April 27th, 2010

We all know that many other ladies out there are culprits of skipping meals, so I decided to check out some health information on my iPhone to see how bad it really is for you. I have quite a few iPhone health apps, which I regularly turn to for dietary information. Recently, a new study showed that fasting or skipping meals is quite bad for your health and could cause injuries. Of course, many girls out there who have wanted to slim down for an upcoming hot date may have cut out breakfast or lunch for a few days to get off that extra 5 pounds. Unfortunately, that is an absolute no-no!
Within this study, women that fasting for 12 hours were asked to do simple exercises, like closing their eyes or standing on one foot. For all of the women who were fasting, it was difficult for them to simply balance compared to the women who had eaten. Overall, this type of fasting impairs balance, which could cause a fall or injury. Even further, fasting affects the body through low blood sugar, which causes dizziness and fatigue. Instead, work to boost your metabolism by eating small healthy meals to keep up your energy levels!

No More Type O?

April 22nd, 2010

This may be catering to a very specific audience, but I, for one, have quite a bit of Type O Negative music on my iPod. Type O Negative was a ridiculous goth band from the 90s, and their music is absolutely my guilty pleasure. Unfortunately, the lead singer Peter Steele has recently died, so the band is no more. There are very few details about his death, though it is being attributed to heart failure.
Type O Negative released their first album in 1991, and they had quite a few hits along the way, including a little bit of scandal when the lead singer posed for Playgirl in 1995. For anyone out there who was a fan or who wants to become a fan of this 90s rock band, check out some of their songs, like Black No. 1, My Girlfriend’s Girlfriend, or Cinnamon Girl. When listening to this type of music on your iPod, it is important to be very open-minded and have a little bit of nostalgia for times long past. I promise you that once you give it a try, it will be more and more addicting and become your guilty pleasure as well! Unfortunately, now we no longer have the option of ever seeing them in concert again.

Need a Little Inspiration?

April 13th, 2010

I have to admit to you that I am an absolute sucker for self-help books, which is precisely why I downloaded the Work-Life Guide as an iPhone app for $1.99. This gives you the help to prepare for the future, and all of the tips show up in simple virtual flashcards. This can help anyone embarking on a new career path, or even those that are experienced and want a little bit more inspiration for their regular work life.

Probably one of the most important lessons that this app will provide to you is that time and commitment will be the keys to your success in your career. So many people want to jump on a speeding train when graduating from college, and they try to make it all happen right away. This app will give you gentle guidance about balancing your life between work and career so that you don’t have to burn out right away. You can make certain tips your favorites, and the app will give you three related tips to every favorite. If you are having a bad day and just can’t take it, this may be your lifeline so that you don’t have a work-related breakdown. Thank goodness!
